Toledo’s cultural gem, the CSCC specializes in the performance of Negro spirituals and is dedicated to its preservation as well as the performance of works by African American composers. The CSCC also maintains a liberal helping of standard classical music in its repertoire. Its members come from all walks of life, unified by their mutual love of great music.

The Director and fifteen people who shared his love of beautiful music, in general, and Negro spirituals, in particular, founded the CLARENCE SMITH COMMUNITY CHORUS (CSCC) in 1976. The Chorus adopted the following purposes, among others:

  • To encourage the preservation of the Negro spiritual through performance;
  • To provide a medium by which more music of African American composers might be heard:
  • To provide for the cultural enrichment of the general community;
  • To provide another dimension to the musical education of the community.
Tours have included a standing ovation at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. The CSCC has been awarded numerous grants from the Ohio Arts Council and the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo. In recognition of their contributions, the Mayor declared January 14, 1990, “CLARENCE SMITH COMMUNITY CHORUS DAY” in Toledo.

The CSCC is available for engagements, both in and out of state. To request more information click here
